In an attempt to make the web faster, Google has launched the much-awaited Page Speed extension for Google Chrome. User can now receive Page Speed performance suggestions to enhance the speed of their sites directly from the Chrome browser.

Webmasters and web developers can use Page Speed to perform several tests on a site's web server configuration and front-end code. These tests are based on a set of best practices known to enhance web page performance. Webmasters who run Page Speed on their pages get a score for each page, as well as suggestions on how to improve its performance.

The Page Speed extension for Chrome has the same core components as the Firefox add-on; however it also comes with two new improvements. Here is an outline of these improvements from the Google Webmaster Central Blog:

We've improved scoring and suggestion ordering to help web developers focus on higher-potential optimizations first. Plus, because making the web faster is a global initiative, Page Speed now supports displaying localized rule results in 40 languages! These improvements are part of the Page Speed SDK, so they will also appear in the next release of our Firefox add-on as well.

To start using the Page Speed Extension

  1. In a new tab, navigate to about:flags
  2. Enable-experimental-extension-APIs
  3. Scroll to the bottom of about:flags and click Relaunch Now for the changes to take effect.
  4. After enabling Experimental Extension APIs and restarting your browser, install Page Speed for Chrome. Once installed Page Speed can be used by clicking on "Analyze Performance" to get a performance report for any web page you visit.

There are additional installation and running instruction here.

Page Speed is a very useful tool that can make your site faster, reduce your bandwidth and hosting costs and improve the web surfing experience!

Do you use Page Speed already? Feel free to share your experiences with the tool below.
